Concerned your fancy email stationary, or recent marketing email you sent is awfully 'Spammy'? Send an email to spamcheck@sitesell.net with the word TEST (in uppercase) in the Subject Line and you will get an email back complete with a basic report of how well your email did.

Go to http://spamcheck.sitesell.com/ to learn more.

For quick reference, this is how my own Outlook Business Stationary stacked up:

Your TOTAL SPAM SCORE for your e-mail was 1.

How To Interpret Your Score:
--------------------------------------------------
The higher the score, the more likely the e-mail will be considered spam by ISPs, which means the more likely it is to get filtered. Levels...

0.0 - 4.5 - nice and clean, no problems except tiny ones below; no action required

4.6 - 7.0 - the strictest may object; clean up the easy-to-find issues (below)

7.1 - 10.0 - getting into dangerous territory; clean up any big issues and the easy-to-find smaller ones

10.1 - 13.0 likely over ISP limits; requires good review and cleaning up

13.1+ major problems; overhaul needed -- systematically clean, point by point and then re-test (this may require two or three checks).
--------------------------------------------------

In order of importance, here are the mistakes that we found in your e-mail...

(0.8 points) An exceedingly large amount of HTML coding is often used to disguise common spam phrases. Consider reworking slightly.
(0.2 points) BODY: I wonder how many emails they sent in error (0.0 points) BODY: HTML included in message

I'm fed up. Big Email, Outlook 2007 is brutal without its first service pack and tonnes of advice everywhere, none of which seems to be the same.

So, I'm going to start building a list here (for myself mostly ;) of the items that seem practical. I expect this list should grow...

Problem #1: Downloading e-mails take forever because I have a bunch of rules that need to be processed.

Reason: Every rule gets processed on every e-mail. if you have a lot of rules, and get a lot of e-mails, you're guaranteed to have problems.

And this issues list:

More to come...

Always nice to hear nice things about the things you work hard at...

Successful Companies Benefi t from itgroove’s Know-How

Mark Sudul of Osler Systems Management Inc. devoted 25 percent of his workday to company IT matters, until itgroove came on board. For the past year though, he’s been attending full time to his tasks as general manager. “I wanted to unload those duties, so I contacted itgroove,” he says. “I sought advice, got recommendations and upgraded all four of our back-end servers according to itgroove’s suggestions. Now they’re monitoring our critical systems, including our Network, Email, File and Database Servers, and I can sleep at night.”
With extensive International and North American experience, itgroove is ideally equipped to evaluate the needs and to recommend best-of-breed products and solutions to small to large Vancouver Island companies. “We help design, build and deploy a customized, scalable and reliable IT architecture,” says Sean Wallbridge, president/principal consultant of itgroove Professional Services Ltd. “We focus on security and on protecting a company’s investment.”
itgroove also looks down the road with each client to determine long-range goals. Respecting budgetary requirements and always attuned to the company’s vision, the most appropriate solution is recommended. So far this year, itgroove has assisted customers in the implementation of over 200 servers, located in eight countries and 20 cities. Three new staff were added, a downtown Victoria office opened its doors, and two new services debuted, the Business Technology Assessment (BTA) and itGuardian. Next up is an online service called Major Change, designed to record system changes in a structured format and will be available not only to itgroove customers, but also to other IT firms wishing to employ standards controls across their infrastructure.
itgroove’s client list continues to lengthen and includes the Save-On Foods Memorial Centre, in which itgroove has established an office to better serve the Downtown Victoria core.
When The Sidney Pier Hotel & Spa needed a local partner to manage and monitor its network of industry-specific programs, general manager Markus Griesser called on itgroove. First, Wallbridge conducted a four-hour Business Technology Assessment. “He returned with a full itemized shopping list of important considerations,” he says. “Within three months, we’d implemented best practices.” Besides the proactive and preventative measures in place, a block of time per month is dedicated to maintaining the network in top form.
“From the get-go when itgroove staff conducted an audit for us, they have come through with flying colours,” says Griesser. “As a business that runs 24/7, we can ill afford to be down for the weekend. Now we have peace of mind.”
Downtimes have been non-existent at Osler Systems Management Inc. since the company hooked up with itgroove. “We know that any problems will be quickly fixed, and that itGuardian ensures that issues are addressed before they affect our business,” says Sudul.
Constant off-site monitoring ensures against that eventuality. “We know before the customer does that disk space is diminishing, for example,” says Wallbridge. “So we alert customers with an e-mail and options – pro-activity is the key.”
An ounce of prevention is well understood by medical practitioners. Daniel Milkovich, M.D. and Kent Banks, M.D. enlisted the services of itgroove when outfi tting their new medical laser esthetics centre, MD Esthetics. “We invested heavily in the best medical software,” says Milkovich. “The staff at itgroove coordinated the purchase of our hardware, the installation of the hardware and the software, and the training of our staff. They worked out a timeline and stuck to it. We really appreciated that. Everything was seamless, and they were very professional.”
According to Wallbridge, professionalism and hearty doses of customer service ensure happy customers. “We do such a good job that people can forget about their IT. We make sure everything is running smoothly so business owners never feel any pain. We’re interested in preserving good customer relations in the long-term.”

At the moment, my preferred Windows Server Time sync configuration is simply to:

(set an authoritative time source on a Windows Server - short and simple)

net time /setsntp:pool.ntp.org

(...or specify the whole set)

net time /setsntp:"0.pool.ntp.org 1.pool.ntp.org 2.pool.ntp.org"

(verify that time source is configured)

net time /querysntp

(Stop and Restart the Windows Time Service)
NET STOP "WINDOWS TIME"
NET START "WINDOWS TIME"

(To force a sync)

w32tm /resync

By default, Microsoft Outlook doesn’t add entries for any statutory or civic holidays to its calendar function. There are two steps to adding the latest holiday information to your Outlook calendar. The first step is to update the Outlook holiday file (this step can be skipped if you are using Outlook 2007), and the second step is to add the holidays to your personal Outlook calendar.

To download the latest holiday file, following these steps:

1. Open the following link in your web browser: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=32C24709-50B5-4698-B5CB-BE7D6765FE3A
2. Click Continue to complete the required validation and then click Download
3. When prompted to run or save the file, click Run
4. Click Run on any additional security warnings
5. When prompted to install the update, choose Yes
6. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement
7. Allow the installation to run (it may take a few minutes), when a pop-up appears indicating ‘The update was applied successfully’, click OK
8. Outlook now has all the holiday information up until 2012

To add Canadian holidays to your Outlook Calendar, follow this quick procedure:
1. From within Outlook, choose the Tools menu and click Options…
2. Under the Calendar section, click the button labeled Calendar Options…
3. In the Calendar Options window, click the Add Holidays… button
4. Scroll through the list and place a tick mark next to Canada and then click OK
5. Outlook will add all the Canadian holidays up to 2012 to your calendar

Summary:
To fully backup a WSS or MOSS installation two main components need to be backed up individually, the IIS Metabase and the WSS content and configuration data. Command-line tools to complete both backups are provided by Microsoft.

Process:
Copy the following script into a batch file and schedule using Windows Task Scheduler:

@ECHO OFF

rem Script to backup the IIS Metabase and WSS databases

SET IIS_BACKUP_NAME="IISMetaBackup"
SET WSS_BACKUP_DEST="D:\TOP\WSSBackups"

rem Delete previous backups
del %WSS_BACKUP_DEST%\*.* /S /F /Q
rmdir %WSS_BACKUP_DEST%\spbr0000 /S /Q

rem Backing up IIS Metabase
cscript C:\WINDOWS\System32\iisback.vbs /backup /b %IIS_BACKUP_NAME%
move /Y C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv\MetaBack\%IIS_BACKUP_NAME%.* %WSS_BACKUP_DEST%

rem Backing up WSS Site collection
"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN\STSADM.EXE" -o backup -directory %WSS_BACKUP_DEST% -backupmethod full

Thanks Dougie...

This is actually quite a common problem on virtual hosts (running VMware Server) with multiple VMs. Basically, as the host is still finishing booting, the VMs start booting automatically (this is so we don't have to start them manually) which puts a huge amount of load on the disks, processor and memory. This extends the response time for some of the heavier services to start and causes them to timeout (30 or less is usually the default).

This isn't so much of a problem on ESX server as there are options to stagger the boot of VMs so the host is fully loaded and can dedicate everything to the VMs, unfortunately no option I am aware of existing in VMware Server. So this leaves is with the option of modifying the service timeout period on the VMs themselves, a fairly straightforward change, from a Microsoft KB:

When a service starts, the service communicates to the Service Control Manager how long the service must have to start (the time-out period for the service). If the Service Control Manager does not receive a "service started" notice from the service within this time-out period, the Service Control Manager terminates the process that hosts the service. This time-out period is typically less than 30 seconds. If you do not adjust this time-out period, the Service Control Manager ends the process and the attached debugger while you are trying to debug. To adjust this time-out period, follow these steps:
a. In Registry Editor, locate, and then right-click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
b. Point to New, and then click DWORD Value. In the right pane of Registry Editor, notice that New Value #1 (the name of a new registry entry) is selected for editing.
c. Type ServicesPipeTimeout to replace New Value #1, and then press ENTER.
d. Right-click the ServicesPipeTimeout registry entry that you created in step c, and then click Modify. The Edit DWORD Value dialog box appears.
e. In the Value data text box, type TimeoutPeriod, and then click OK

Note TimeoutPeriod is a placeholder for the value of the time-out period (in milliseconds) that you want to set for the service. For example, if you want to set the time-out period to 24 hours (86400000 milliseconds), type 86400000.

f. Restart the computer. You must restart the computer for Service Control Manager to apply this change.

I really appreciate this honest write-up and would have written this myself had I not found someone who did it (long before I would have ;).

Kudos to them but a good reference, particularly in regards to time needed, etc. http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/06/18/159413.aspx
